Port Hardy Bear Smart Community Program

March 07, 2017

Open House March 29, 2017

Guest Speaker: Crystal McMillan, MA

Executive Director, Bear Smart BC

Every year in British Columbia hundreds of bears are destroyed as a result of human-caused conflicts. In rare instances, people are injured or even killed as a result of these conflicts. Most of these problems begin when people allow bears to gain access to non-natural food sources such as garbage and other backyard attractants.

The Bear Smart Communities Program was introduced by the Province of BC in 2004 to assist in reducing conflicts with bears. The program has evolved over the years and is providing guidance and best practices, combined with incentives to communities to participate in the program.

The goal of this Program is to address the root causes of human-bear conflicts, thereby reducing the risks to human safety and private property, as well as the number of bears that have to be destroyed each year.

The District of Port Hardy is working towards becoming an officially designated Bear Smart Community. We need your help. Please join us on Wednesday March 29, 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Municipal Hall 7360 Columbia Street to learn more about what you can do to prevent human-bear conflicts in our community.
