Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day
May 5
Event Navigation

May 5 is Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Awareness Day.
Together with neighbouring Indigenous communities and communities across Canada, the District of Port Hardy is committed to raising public awareness that Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirited people are more likely to experience violence than any other population in Canada and of the need for urgent, informed and collaborative action to address the system violence that exists today.
Commemorate MMIWG Awareness Day by wearing red on May 5 or hanging a red dress in your window or yard leading up to May 5 in honour and recognition of the thousands of Indigenous women, girls and two-spirited people who have gone missing or been murdered.
Learn more from the Government of Canada about the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) in Canada, the National Action Plan, and additional programs and implemented to address the federal pathway, national action plan and Calls for Justice.
