    NVI ACCESSIBILITY

The District of Port Hardy is excited to announce its partnership with the Mount Waddington Regional District, Town of Port McNeill, Village of Alert Bay, and the Village of Port Alice in developing a regional Accessibility Plan. This plan will help to articulate some of the barriers experienced by people with disabilities in interacting with local governments in the Northern Vancouver Island region, and define a plan to remove and prevent those barriers.

Types of barriers experienced by people with disabilities can include barriers with social and physical aspects, such as physical barriers, systemic and institutional barriers, information and communication barriers, attitudes, sensory barriers, and technological barriers.

As a part of the development of this plan, an Accessibility Committee, community survey, and a community feedback tool will all be designed to obtain community feedback on how local governments in the area can provide better access to services for people with disabilities. The Accessibility Plan will be created to satisfy the legislative requirements of the Accessible BC Act, and will be updated every 3 years.

The Community Survey will be available during the second phase of the project, anticipated to take place in Spring, 2024.
