On February 12, Council had the opportunity to express its sincere gratitude and appreciation to members of the Port Hardy RCMP detachment in honour of RCMP Appreciation Day. Mayor Corbett-Labatt shared a heartfelt thanks for the continued dedication and sacrifices made to keep our communities safe, notably on this BC Day of Observance.

On behalf of the citizens of Port Hardy, we gather today on the traditional territory of the Kwakiutl. As we observe the BC Day of Mourning it feels especially appropriate to also recognize RCMP Appreciation Day and to express our sincere gratitude. 

Your work asks so much of you. In moments of uncertainty, crisis, and heartbreak, you are often the first to step forward. Tragedies such as the devastating shooting in Tumbler Ridge remind us of the emotional weight you carry and the courage, professionalism, and promptness with which you respond – even the incident may feel deeply personal. 

Behind every uniform is a human being who serves with dedication, compassion, and strength. We also recognize and thank your families, whose support and sacrifice are part of this service. 

Today, we want you to know that your work matters, your presence matters, and you are deeply appreciated. Thank you for your continued commitment to keeping our communities safe.
