Port Hardy Welcomes Sister City Delegation from Numata, Japan
July 22, 2025

PORT HARDY, BC – The District of Port Hardy was delighted to host a lively and heartwarming visit from its Sister City, Numata in Hokkaido, Japan, with a delegation of 16 visitors—including 11 children aged 12 to 17—joining us for five memorable days of cultural exchange, friendship, and adventure.
The visit was a resounding success, marked by laughter, learning, and shared experiences. Thanks to the dedicated planning and enthusiastic participation of District staff, the Numata guests were treated to a rich North Island experience. Activities included a tour of Joey’s Museum in Coal Harbour, a visit to Chief Calvin Hunt’s Copper Maker Gallery, and hands-on fun at Storey’s Beach with games and sports that brought everyone together.
The visitors were also introduced to important community spaces through engaging tours of the Fire Hall, the Port Hardy Airport, and the local RCMP detachment. We even took a trip to see Suquash and played with all the crabs on the beach. A variety of play and crafts sessions gave the youth a chance to express themselves creatively, while shared meals and celebrations added to the warmth of their welcome—especially during the vibrant FILOMI Days festival.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the local homestay families, whose generosity and hospitality added a deeply personal touch to the experience. These families not only hosted the guests but also took them on unforgettable side adventures such as fishing, caving, wildlife viewing, and visits to Alert Bay and Telegraph Cove.
One of the highlights of the visit was a friendly game of baseball, which captured the joyful spirit of the exchange. Laughter, camaraderie, and cross-cultural friendships blossomed throughout the short but impactful stay.
A heartfelt thank you goes to the North Island Crisis and Counselling Society and BC Transit for their generous contribution of volunteer transportation services—your support was instrumental in ensuring the visit ran smoothly and efficiently.
We would also like to express our deep appreciation for two long-standing and passionate volunteers: Mayor Pat Corbett-Labatt and Leslie Driemel. Their continued dedication to the Sister City program has helped it thrive over the years. A special mention goes to Leslie, who has been involved in the exchange for over 30 years and has represented Port Hardy on eight visits to Numata. If you’re ever curious about Numata—its culture, traditions, or community—Leslie is the person to ask.
District of Port Hardy staff worked tirelessly to ensure the tour ran smoothly and provided a welcoming environment for our international guests. As we reflect on this wonderful exchange, we extend an open invitation to community members interested in future Sister City visits—whether as guides, homestay hosts, youth ambassadors (especially secondary school students), or chaperones.
