Great BC ShakeOut
October 16 at 10:16 am - 10:30 am

This is the day millions of people worldwide will practice how to “Drop, Cover and Hold On” during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills. Participate in the Annual Great British Columbia ShakeOut event.
WHY SHAKEOUT?
While potential earthquake hazards depend on your location, everywhere in British Columbia is considered at high risk in relation to the rest of Canada. The Great British Columbia ShakeOut, is an annual opportunity for individuals, communities, schools, and organizations to practice essential earthquake safety measures such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On.”
WHAT TO DO IF YOU FEEL AN EARTHQUAKE
If you feel the unmistakable shaking of an earthquake, don’t wait! Immediately Drop, Cover and Hold On – preferably under a sturdy piece of furniture like a table or desk. Many injuries occur when people try to run. When the shaking stops, count to 60 before getting up, allowing displaced objects to settle. Check around you and consider if the building is safe or if you should leave. Be aware that aftershocks are likely.
Here are 7 steps to earthquake safety:
STEP UP YOUR EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS
Being earthquake prepared is more than just the drill. Regularly reviewing and updating your emergency preparedness plans and supplies is a critical for earthquake preparedness. Also taking proactive measures to secure your space can prevent potential damage and injuries. ShakeOut BC and PrepareBC offer a number of resources to help you prepare for the ‘Big One’ whether you are at home, at work, or on the move.
