Navigating Trails and Roads
Important Logging Road Safety Tips
• Use a radio if you have one and know the road frequency.
• Drive with headlights and taillights on at all times. Automatic headlights on a sunny day will not cut it – manually turn your lights on!
• Yield to logging trucks and other industrial vehicles. You are using their roads as a guest, and they have the right of way at all times.
• Always keep to the right, and expect traffic around blind corners.
• Do not stop in active work areas, on narrow roads or on bridges.
• Respect instructions from flaggers or forestry personnel and all posted signage.
• Plan for limited cell service and variable conditions.
• Follow signage and do not proceed through gated areas. These are gated for public safety.
• Always be prepared–bring maps, emergency supplies and let someone know your route.
You will not have cellular data in most places you travel…. be prepared!
Great resources have been created for those wishing to navigate the trails and back roads on the North Island:
Western Forest Products now has the WFP Road Info Map and when used with Avenza Maps on your smartphone, the map is geo-referenced
Pack it in Pack it Out
Once you leave the centre of our communities, there are no services to remove trash. If you pack it in, please pack it out. Our parks, trails, beaches, and backroads are not dumping grounds—help keep them clean and beautiful by disposing of waste responsibly.
